FAQ: Greenhouse Poly
How long will my greenhouse poly last?
Greenhouse poly can last for years longer than standard 6 mil plastic sheeting due to additives that help the plastic resist degradation from UV light. Despite its increased longevity, the PAR range of light allowed through greenhouse plastic starts to degrade over time, so it is recommended that growers replace their poly covering every 4-5 years.
Should I use a single layer or double layer of poly on my high tunnel?
Generally, single layer poly works well in warmer climates and for growers that are not concerned with extending their growing season. Double layer poly is better for areas with colder winters, as double inflated poly roughly doubles the insulative value of the two layers. Despite these differences, some growers in warm climates still choose to use double inflated poly, as a secondary benefit is that the external pressure applied by the inflation blowers will reduce the physical wear from wind stress.
What is the difference between standard poly sheeting and IRAC poly?
IRAC poly, or infrared / anti-condensate poly, has additives inside the plastic that help to retain heat and reduce the formation of condensation droplets inside the structure.
What is woven poly used for?
Woven poly is more durable than standard 6 mil poly sheeting. It is used in applications where wind damage is an issue or in spots on the high tunnel that will see more regular wear-and-tear, such as roll-up side walls or end walls.
How do I size my greenhouse poly?
You can find the size of the poly needed to cover your greenhouse by throwing a tape measure up and over your greenhouse and measuring the full length up and over from ground level to ground level. Our Rimol sales representatives can also help you size your greenhouse poly based on the size of your structure. Give us a call and we can help!
How do I care for my poly covering?
Greenhouse poly, when installed properly, requires very little care (check out our tips for installing your greenhouse covering). Rimol sells poly repair tape in case of emergencies.
